transient urbanism

Context

My thesis explored ways to facilitate and improve a transient lifestyle. The sharing economy and digital technologies have changed people’s living and work behavior in ways that conventional furniture, storage solutions, and lifestyle products don’t address. City dwellers need products that are designed to last and travel with them through the long journey of life. I seek to help the semi-nomadic urban professional establish themselves in a new home and quickly overcome the disruption of relocation. We should be able to move through the urban landscape and occupy new spaces without giving up the essentials of home.

I see an excellent opportunity to design furniture and lifestyle products to better provide quality and continuity to the peripatetic lifestyle of the nomadic city dweller. The problem with conventional furniture is that it isn’t made to travel with the consumer. Portable, durable products not only reduce waste and promote sustainable consumerism, but they also address the emotional needs of the transient urbanite by injecting permanence into a life defined by change.
