Film photography can be very rewarding and continues to be enjoyed by many despite the prevalence of digital technology. While analog cameras can be found at very affordable prices, film is expensive no matter what type or format you choose to shoot. Extra care must be given before each exposure to maximize the value of your investment. If you’re using standard roll film, it might be several days, or even weeks, before you see the results of your work due to the time it takes to develop and process. Instant film provides an analog experience along with the convenience of immediate results.
For some, the instant cameras currently on the market offer all the functionality and performance they’re looking for. If, however, you want a sharper lens and more control over the exposure settings of each shot, you’ll find the options rather limited. My solution was to design a medium format film back for a modular camera system that was popular amongst press photographers throughout the 1970s. This film holder allows the user to shoot Instax Wide film with the Mamiya Universal camera system.
